BlackBerry Manufacturer RIM To Fire 2000 Employees

Research In Motion(RIM), the maker of the famous BlackBerry phone has announced that it will cut down 2000 jobs and its Chief Operating Officer may get retired in a near future. The announcement was made earlier today.

RIM’s main product, the BlackBerry is facing a tough competition from Android, Apple’s iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S II. Its sales have gone down since the launch of these products.

The affected employees will be notified as soon as possible. These layoffs, though not unexpected, will cut down the total force of the company by 10% and that will make quite a difference.

No doubt that BlackBerry phones are a status symbol but their sales are not in a competition with that of Android phones and the iPhone. Recently, Apple Inc. announced its second quarter sells which was around 20.3 million. Blackberry sold nearly 13.2 million units during that period. So clearly, BlackBerry is not in a direct competition with the iPhone,

RIM’s Chief Operating Officer Don Morrison is currently on medical leave and it is believed that he will retire soon. RIM has already announced his successors as Thorsten Heins and Jim Rowan, who will share COO duties.

It is sad that such a remarkable phone is losing its charm but in today’s competitive world, if you don’t change with the need of the hour, you soon get forgotten.
