Beware Of The Pottermore Scam

Are you a Harry Potter fan? Do you want to lay your hands on Pottermore website before anyone else? Then wait. You might get targeted by online scammers who are selling fake Pottermore accounts to access the exclusive content by JK Rowling.

Pottermore is a website by JK Rowling which will feature exclusive stories and some background information about the popular Harry Potter series. It will be officially opening in October.

But even in August, some people are selling fake Pottermore accounts online which they claim will give a user access to all the exclusive content before anyone else.

Let us warn you that these accounts are not legitimate. Most of the times, these scammers ask for money in return of the account which never works but sometimes, they even direct their targets to infected sites and at the end, user find himself amidst viruses and other sorts of malware.

This is an example of innumerable cases where scammers try to cash a latest news by hitting their target’s field of interest.

We advice our readers to stay out of these type of tricks by being aware and even if you are quite sure that the person is not cheating, do run a background check on the service he is claiming and if possible, the person himself.

The Biggest Hack Ever Discovered

The Security Experts at McAfee have discovered the biggest cyber attack in the history which has infiltrated the networks of the United Nations, various governments and many multinational companies.

McAfee’s security experts who uncovered this attack believed a “specific country” was behind these attacks. Though they didn’t take any name, but hinted that Chinese hackers and possibly Chinese Government was behind these attacks.

This attack was not done over night rather it was a 5 year long operation code named “Operation Shady Rat”. McAfee came to know about these attacks in March when it was reviewing the contents of one of its servers.

Governments of United States, India, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam and Canada were some of the targets. Some of the International agencies like Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency were also targeted. Big tech giants were also targeted but their names and information were not disclosed.

Our take on this news is that if China is behind these attacks, it is acting like a coward who just wants to bully other nations and sometimes its own people. China should not forget that the countries that it targeted were one of the biggest contributors in its GDP.

What do you guys think about these attacks? Are these attacks an act of cowardice or is it an ugly display of power?

Apple Inc. Richer Than The United States Government ?

It is a well known fact that Apple Inc. has cash reserves more than any other company but the fact that it is even richer than the United States Government is absolutely fantastic.

Recently Apple announced that its earnings have reached $76 billion due to large sale of its iDevices. The iPhone and the iPad are the most popular products of the Cupertino, California based company.

On the other side, as the deadline to the US debt approaches close, the Treasury Department of United States Government has reported that its bank account has even less than $74 billion and could become zero by early August.

This only shows that the American government and the Corporate America are two worlds apart. While the corporations continue to grow and their combined profits accumulate around $1.2 trillion, the government consistently has lost its cash reserves and its debts are increasing day by day.

According to Apple, these cash reserves will help the company to secure its future as it will ensure that they do not run into any financial trouble like the company had to face during the launch phase of the iPhone 4.

So, should American government start selling the iPhone and the iPad or should Apple take over the running of Washington DC?

Internet Explorer Users Have Low IQ ?

Are you an Internet Explorer user? A recent study claims that IE users have lower IQ than the users who use Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari or Opera. If the claims are true, it is bad news for Microsoft as it has recently launched its Internet Explorer 9.

This study was done by an online psychometric testing company AptiQuant Psychometric Consulting which states that a user’s IQ and intelligence is directly related to the choice of web browser he/she uses.

The company also states that the users who use Internet Explorer or Opera with a Chrome frame have a slightly better IQ than those who only use Microsoft’s web browser.

Findings rave about that qualities of other browsers and claims that Firefox and Chrome users are best as compared to others. This study was done on more than 100,000 people of USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand by taking an online test and their scores were based on Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale.

While Chrome and Firefox users can boast about their browsers, IE users can’t even think to do so after this study. One thing that must be noted here is that these claims are only published by this company and are not yet approved by any other organization.

Anonymous Hacked FBI Defence Contractor’s Website

FBI’s biggest cyber enemy has struck again. The hacker group Anonymous has allegedly hacked FBI’s security contractor ManTech International and has found some valuable information according to the group’s latest tweet.

The hacker group Anonymous has a custom to attack FBI related websites on Friday every week. This attack is also seen as a retaliation after FBI helped to arrest some hackers related to the group in Netherlands and Britain.

In the support of its claim, Anonymous offered to show the correspondence between ManTeCH and NATO(North Atlantic Treaty Organization) which includes talks with “NATO Theatre Of Operations”, the tech department of NATO.

No comment was made by ManTech International who provides its services to U.S. Defense, State and Justice Departments after the attack. Ironically, the firm also boasts of its cyber security services.

The involvement of LulzSec cannot be denied in this matter as both these hacker groups have collaborated almost in all attacks.

Recently, these groups gave a call to boycott eBay and PayPal for their refusal to handle financial transactions of whistleblower site Wikileaks. It doesn’t seem that they are going to stop and quit their alleged mission “to ensure freedom in the cyber world”.

If the world’s best security agency cannot secure its website, can we?

Google Buys Patents From IBM

Following its habit of securing its “intellectual property”, Google has purchased a hell lot of patents from IBM. The Mountain View, California based company has secured over 1000 patents from the New York based tech giant.

The patents transferred by IBM to Google include a vast area of products ranging from microprocessing chips, regional databases to memory fabrication and architecture. In an email, Google said that,”Like many tech companies, at times we’ll acquire patents that are relevant to our business”.

But on the other side, no comment was provided by IBM on this matter. It is rumored that IBM has got a huge amount of money from Google in this deal and may have got access to several of Google’s other patents. This might mean that IBM may use Android platform in future.

Google has been sued by many tech companies for its Android OS and recently, it was sued for its anti-competitive actions. Thus the American giant was in a desperate need to secure its so called “intellectual property”.

Our take on this news is that Google is playing a smart game here. It is a well known fact that more than half of the smartphone companies are using Google’s pet, the Android platform.

Google already has patented its Android platform and is currently trying to get the rights of every technology that is linked to it.

Will this move of Google help it in future?

Nokia’s Smartphone Sales Down: Slips From 1st To 3rd

Nokia is currently undergoing the worst period it has ever seen in its 15 years of business. First it was thrown from its first place by Apple and now Samsung has kicked it out from its second position in smartphone sales.

Nokia held the crown of being the world’s largest smartphone seller but due to its bad sales and tough competition by Apple Inc. and Samsung has made it ending up at the 3rd position. This is first time in the history of the company that it has been replaced by its rivals.

Apple recently announced its second quarter sales to be around 20.3 million iPhones which is the best till now from the American giant. Samsung also sold over1 19 million smartphones which is far ahead of Nokia, which only sold 16.7 million units.

Nokia did not comment on this but an insider said that this may be due to the low demand in smartphone sector. But had low demand been the cause, Apple’s and Samsung’s sales would have been affected too, so it is not the case here.

Nokia has recently announced that it will be dropping its Symbian platform and has made a deal with Microsoft to use its Windows Phone Platform in its future handsets. With this move, Nokia clearly has lost its USP.

Do you think Nokia will be able to get back its position of leading manufacturer?
