Nokia’s Smartphone Sales Down: Slips From 1st To 3rd

Nokia is currently undergoing the worst period it has ever seen in its 15 years of business. First it was thrown from its first place by Apple and now Samsung has kicked it out from its second position in smartphone sales.

Nokia held the crown of being the world’s largest smartphone seller but due to its bad sales and tough competition by Apple Inc. and Samsung has made it ending up at the 3rd position. This is first time in the history of the company that it has been replaced by its rivals.

Apple recently announced its second quarter sales to be around 20.3 million iPhones which is the best till now from the American giant. Samsung also sold over1 19 million smartphones which is far ahead of Nokia, which only sold 16.7 million units.

Nokia did not comment on this but an insider said that this may be due to the low demand in smartphone sector. But had low demand been the cause, Apple’s and Samsung’s sales would have been affected too, so it is not the case here.

Nokia has recently announced that it will be dropping its Symbian platform and has made a deal with Microsoft to use its Windows Phone Platform in its future handsets. With this move, Nokia clearly has lost its USP.

Verizon Lags Behind AT&T In The iPhone Sales

Verizon wireless, which is a joint venture of Verizon and Vodafone, has gone a long way in the iPhone activations but still it lags behind AT&T, which is its number one rival in this sector. No doubt, Verizon’s sales have increased as compared to AT&T, but the total number of its subscribers still remain less than those of AT&T.

When Verizon started selling the iPhone, it was expected that many of AT&T’s customers will shift to Verizon because of the poor service offered by AT&T. Upto some extent, it did happen but it was not enough to beat down AT&T’s sales.

On Friday, Verizon reported that it had activated around 2.3 million iPhones during its second quarter. On the other side, AT&T announced that it had activated 3.6 million iPhones, out of which a quarter were from new customers of its network. So a clear cut difference is there in the sales of both these giants.

There can be many reasons for Verizon’s failure to overcome AT%T. A major reason is that in amidst of a large number of the iPhone 5 rumors, people are deploying a strategy of ‘wait n watch’. If the iPhone 5 is going to be launched in this fall, there is sense in waiting for it instead of buying an existing model.
